POMONA – Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team moved a little bit closer to wrapping up one of the four spots in the California Collegiate Athletic Association championship tournament, although the Golden Eagles certainly would have liked a larger jump.
The Golden Eagles battled to a 0-0 tie with Cal Poly Pomona Friday at Kellogg Field, which snapped a three-match losing streak, but extended Cal State L.A.'s winless string to four. Cal State L.A. (9-5-3, 7-3-1) fell five points behind CCAA South Division leading Cal State Dominguez Hills, but stayed four points ahead of the third-place Broncos, who have played one more game than the Golden Eagles. Cal State L.A. currently holds the No. 3 position in the conference with three matches remaining.
Cal Poly Pomona (5-6-3, 5-4-3) is in the fourth spot in the conference, four points ahead of Cal State Monterey Bay.
The Broncos held a 21-16 advantage in shots, including a 10-5 edge in the second half. Cal State L.A. also surrendered four of the five shots taken in the second overtime period.
Cal Poly Pomona also held an 8-7 edge in corner kicks.
Noe David, in his first start of the season for Cal State L.A., made 10 saves to post the shutout.
Marvin Sandoval had a team-high five shots for the Golden Eagles, while
Morten Marthinsen took four shots.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Sunday with a road match at Cal State San Bernardino.
